Laminate Countertops: Easy Ways to Repair and Hide the DamageCountertops take a great deal of abuse, even when care is taken to prevent damage. Heavy items can fall out of cabinetry and ding the laminate surface, and people are not always careful about using cutting boards and hot pads. In time, laminate countertops begin to show wear, but it is easy to repair or hide the damage. The following easy ways to repair and hide damage to laminate countertops will extend the life and greatly improve the overall look of the room. Laminate Touchup Touchup products are available to repair small scratches and dings to laminate surfaces, and they are available in a number of colors that can be mixed to create just the right shade. Gloss additive is also available, and it can be mixed in to match surfaces that shine. When properly applied, touchup products can effectively hide the damage. How to Repair Loose Laminate Veneer Laminate veneer is glued to a base, and it sometimes becomes loose, especially around the edges. Repair loose veneer as soon as possible to avoid further damage, and use clear drying adhesive strong enough to bond veneer to the base. Begin by blowing or carefully brushing away any dust or debris, and apply the adhesive according to product label instructions. Immediately wipe away any excess adhesive, and lay a sheet of waxed paper over the surface. Place heavy books over the repair until the adhesive dries. For vertical locations, use painter’s tape to hold the veneer in place until the adhesive is completely dry. Create an Insert for Areas of Extensive Damage When countertops are burned or gouged beyond repair, the damage can be cut away and the area can be filled in with another type of material. Consider cutting away a damaged portion of a laminate countertop, and fill it in with butcher block or sealed granite of the same thickness. This will provide a built-in cutting board and solve a serious and unsightly problem. Quick and Easy Cover-Up Ideas The easiest way to hide damage to laminate countertops is with removable decorative items such as wooden or glass cutting boards or sealed granite tiles. Consider purchasing attractive cutting boards made from bamboo or heat-tempered glass inlayed with designs. Granite tiles are also decorative and are very affordable in comparison to granite cutting boards. They can be purchased from home improvement stores, but they must be properly sealed before use. Laminate countertops are one of the cheapest varieties available, but to save money and materials it is best to repair or hide the damage whenever possible. If countertops are badly worn or damaged, consider replacement, and contact a professional to perform the job. New laminate countertops are a great way to add beauty and appeal to a room while giving it a completely new look.
