All You Need to Know about Modern Elevators System
by Sasha Katrych on Jun 1, 2017
As technology advances, so are modern elevators too with their modernization. A study on smart elevator systems projects their growth at 16.2% from 2015 until 2025. This proves the industry’s awareness of the massive benefits that these modern elevators have in many buildings. They are prevalently used to replace the aging elevator systems in hospitals, universities, residential and other retail buildings. The main reason behind this modernization is the energy-efficiency and performance.
The modern elevator systems are defined not only by their efficient vertical transportation but extra features too, such as the destination dispatch systems, access control, touchscreens, biometrics, and energy-efficiency. Energy efficiency is a key feature of these modern systems when compared with the aging systems because companies endeavor to go green.
Whenever looking for modernization of your existing lifts or installing new ones, check if the supplier delivers a whole range of modern features. The supplier should also be well-rounded with a range of elevator products from different companies.
The Benefits of Modern Elevators Systems
Performance
Typically, the elevators have a lifespan of over 20 years. The performance will decline as years go by. This can be evidenced by the frequent downtime, with doors closing slowly and with the speed being affected. These could be the ideal signs that you should consider the modern elevator systems to enhance the performance. You can replace or modernize the existing lifts. Replacing the entire system could be more costly compared to upgrading or modernizing.
The modern elevators system features the destination dispatch technology that is capable of reducing the wait times and grouping the passengers according to where they are going. The advancement of microprocessors helps in learning the traffic patterns of your tenants and then adjusts according to that pattern. This increases the efficiency of the elevators and that of business in commercial buildings. With the aging lift systems, passengers have to wait for a long time especially in multitenant buildings.
Energy-efficiency
Ideally, an elevators system consumes about 5% of the building’s total energy consumption. The modern elevators need no massive ventilation than the old ones. They save you more energy costs. To make the existing lifts more energy-efficient, manufacturers will have to replace the older motors and the drives with modern systems.
Modern systems use less energy and generate less heat during their operations. This saves the owners lots of money. The old elevator systems often emit carbon particles and that’s not environmentally friendly. For companies committed to clean environments, elevator modernization should be a priority.
Noise reduction
One other benefit of the modern elevators system is the electromagnetic noise reduction when they operate. They use the solid-state elevator drives that contribute largely to reducing this noise. The downside of these drives is that they can affect the electrical performance because the older generators may not be compatible with them. However, the overall performance outweighs the downsides.
Should you upgrade or replace the existing lifts?
Given the above benefits of elevator modernization, one might be tempted to replace the older systems right away. Sometimes replacing can be too costly compared to the upgrades. When upgrading, facility managers evaluate the existing lifts to see if they can measure the door opening/closing time, vibration, sound, and acceleration. This evaluation will help in highlighting the major areas that need modernization.
To replace the existing lifts can be a mammoth task at hand that will incur more costs. It might interrupt the operations of your business altogether while maintenance is in progress. Unless the existing lifts have deteriorated beyond modernization, do not opt for replacement. Modernization is less expensive and takes less time to complete. No matter the brand of the elevators, the specialist can manage the upgrades.
With competent elevator technicians, your modernization can be expedited to start saving more energy and improving the overall performance of the elevators. No owner loves to receive endless calls from tenants reporting the malfunctioning elevators. The aging elevators are notorious for leaving passengers stuck inside for many hours. Modern elevators system is the solution of many tall buildings in saving more energy.
