How to Add the Right Accent to Your Home Decor?

by Guest Post on May 19, 2017

What is it that turns a house into a home? It is usually the brick-a-brass you have picked up, from different corners of the world, during your tours and vacations. It is also your favorite drapes and matching upholstery. It is at least one heirloom antique piece that sits confused amidst the modern décor.

Before the interior décor revolution came along, we were never sure how to make that one teakwood coffee table fit in with the sectional sofas. We had no idea how a 19th-century chandelier could complement the beauty of a vintage hutch cabinet. Nevertheless, finally, here it is. The era of accent furniture.

Who takes the spotlight?

The secret to rocking this style of perfectly misplaced home décor is to know where to stop. Your accent furniture should be the focal point of the room. Decorating around a statement piece is the toughest challenge there is in a home designer’s handbook.

Small is good

The key is to start small. You can start with a statement lampshade or a simple footstool with striking prints. A little chair or a bedside table is a perfect way to start accenting your home décor. This is the perfect way to start. You cannot go wrong with a small coffee table to complement your eclectic sectionals.

Keep it proportional

Your statement piece should be similar to the rest of the furniture in the room, in size. The pattern and the material should create all the differences. The light in the chamber has many roles to play in this. Place your accent piece in the focal point of the space. Never add an oversized piece of art in the middle of a room with no personality. You want the rest of the furnishing to hold their place, but at the same time offer attention to your statement piece.

Pattern it right

The print and the design have a significant role in creating the right balance in the room. Your drapes and rug should not clash with your accent furniture directly. They should only elevate it. Choose one vibrant print to create your focal point. For example – if you are thinking of playing it safe with monochrome drapes, rugs, and sectionals, you can turn up the snazzy with fluorescent throw pillows on your vintage futon. Do not overthink it. Just be sure it does not hurt the eye. The prints should not clash, and that is the most significant bit of theory here.

The pattern and the size of the furniture in a room should be interrelated. They should not be completely independent of each other. They should not compete either. This can be a little tricky to pull off. Therefore, most successful designers only go with their gut feeling. The results are mesmerizing and unique. You need to put in a little bit of yourself into every home décor project. This will keep your projects personal, unique, and exciting.
