Variable Frequency Drives: to Maximize Power Savings
by Guest Post on Mar 11, 2013
It has been tested by a lot of professionals in the electrical industry that pumps with variable frequency drives can reduce maintenance in the system and save the wasted energy associated with mechanical flow regulation.
While most of the pumps operate at the fixed flow established by the hard pipe system needs, many pumps require variable flow to meet the changing process demands. The most common type of method used for controlling variable pump system output is the use of a functional variable frequency drive.
What is a VFD?
Variable frequency drive, also known as VFD is used for adjusting a flow or pressure in a pump to the real demand. Its main function is to control the modulation of the frequency of the electric power supplied to a pump. A user can experience significant energy savings by using this useful controlling system in a pump. The other name of variable frequency drive is adjustable frequency drive or inverter drive.
They are also used to enhance the functionality of the pumping machines. Apart from being used in lift station pump systems, they are also used in machine tool drives, compressors, and in ventilators for large building structures. The technology used in this speed controlling system is now mature and enjoying the wider use with AC induction motors. A VFD has a very simple design and consists of four chambers, mainly the rectifier, intermediate circuit, inverter and the control unit.
What work does VFD do?
Variable frequency drives enable pumps to accommodate fluctuating demand, run them at lower speed and draws less speed. They still maintain the requirement of the pumps. They allow more precise control of processes including even distribution of water. Using a VFD to operate a pump not only helps in power savings but also reduces the wear and tear of bearing and seal. They also aid in minimizing downtime and maintenance costs. They are extremely versatile in nature and offer a high degree of motor control. The speeds of the motor can be adjusted very easily by using these effective devices.
How variable frequency drive helps in energy consumption?
Users gain dramatic energy savings by using different types of industrial pumps having the system of variable frequency drives. Using this system is just like the way people drive cars, changing the speed by changing the engine’s output.
The same principle is used in the working of this drive system. Instead of changing the system resistance to maintain the flow, there is a change in the speed of the pump. The best thing about this control is that it changes the energy input rather than relying on the valve to strip the energy system. It is because of this mechanism that there is a maximum energy saving during the working of the pump.
If your job requires the use of pumping machines, prefer using a variable frequency drive to maximize power savings.
